Mix ‘n’ Mingle 2017
The Mix ‘n’ Mingle is an opportunity for authors, writers, journalists, and bibliophiles alike to meet and learn more about Passages & Prose 2017. This year’s guest presenters include children’s authors: Janet Carlisle (Birds of A Feather); Dr. Shellie Hipsky and Alyssa Nevin Hipsky, Dr. Hipsky’s daughter and illustrator of the book (Hopping Off On a Business Trip); and winners from the 2016 WQED Writers Contest who will present an anthology of their stories.

Janet Carlisle focuses her creative energy on mixed-media collage. A native of Springdale, Pennsylvania, Carlisle is deeply connected to her roots. The descendant of four Lithuanian grandparents, she serves as chairwoman of the Lithuanian Nationality and Heritage Room at The University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning.
She studied at Cleveland Institute of Art and Carnegie Mellon University, and has a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Visual Art from what is now Chatham University and a Masters in Art Therapy from Seton Hill University. An Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) certified therapist, Carlisle is a member of the American Art Therapy Association, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Society of Artists, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and Penn Hills Arts Council. She recently retired as a caseworker for the Neighborhood Living Project, a housing program for individuals living with chronic mental illness and homelessness at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and has also worked as an art therapist for the Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery.
Published by Word Association Publishers, Carlisle will formally release Birds of A Feather in June 2017, her first children’s book which she both authored and illustrated. At her church in Springdale, Pennsylvania, she founded the Open Art Studio where she leads three art expression groups for children, youth, and adults during the week. She exhibits and sells her art around Pittsburgh and makes her home in Verona with her husband David and cat Frida.
Dr. Shellie Hipsky inspires, educates, and entertains internationally. Dr. Shellie Hipsky is affiliated with the following organizations: the National Association for Professional Women, Women’s Small Business Association, Coterie. She also serves on the Advisory Boards of the National Association for Women Business Owners, the Homeless Children’s Education Fund, and the World Heritage Cultural Center. As a former professor of the Global Perspective at the PhD Level for over a decade she is a proven expert on what she teaches. She keynotes events around the globe. The latest of her 10 published books, the internationally best selling Common Threads trilogy, provides “Inspiration, Empowerment, and Balance” based on 100 amazing interviews from her Empowering Women Radio. She is delighted to work with her talented daughter Alyssa Hipsky on this The World is Ours children’s book series that supports the Next Generation Global Sisterhood!

Alyssa Nevin Hipsky
Alyssa Nevin Hipsky is a nine-year-old illustrator who hopped at the opportunity to work with her mom on her first published children’s book! She is the apprentice for master artist Kat Belskey of the Mosaic K Studio. Alyssa loves gymnastics, horseback riding, science, and the arts.
She plans on running a science company when she is older. She loves to travel with her mom on business trips. Alyssa is a founder of the Next Generation Global Sisterhood, which is a volunteering organization that gives girls the opportunity to help others in need.
For more than 20 years, WQED has hosted a Writers Contest for young writers and illustrators. Winners from the 2016 Writers Contest in grades Kindergarten through fifth grades will present their individual stories. An anthology of their works recently published by Word Association Publishers is available for purchase.
